Birmingham University is one of the top universities in Britain. One of the fabled ‘red brick’ universities, it is renowned for being one of the top institutions of learning in the country and one where many aspiring students hope to spend between 3 and 7 years of their academic lives. But not just British students. At the university each year there are around 2000 overseas students who come to gain an expert understanding of their subject under the detailed guidance of exceptional professors. The application of overseas students is positively encouraged with numerous bursary schemes aimed at making sure that financial troubles do not prevent students from applying and extra English lessons to break down any potential language barriers.
Now, imagine that you have been invited to interview as an overseas student. You have just arrived at Birmingham airport and know that you need to get to the accommodation that the university has arranged for you. It’s only when you see a map that you realise your problem; the accommodation is 4 miles away from the airport and, worse still, 2 miles away from the university. Your interview is at 9 o’clock – just your luck that it has to be one of the first in the day. That means a doubly early start in the morning, a rushed breakfast, a hurry to try and catch the, frankly, unreliable British bus to try and get there on time. Not exactly going to put you in the right frame of mind for an interview. Now, imagine that you have hired a car. 2 miles is covered in a flash. That means; no early start, a relaxed breakfast and a leisurely drive into the university, leaving you in a completely relaxed frame of mind for the interview. Hiring a car is essential; your university place may depend on it!

As a child my Mother used to often take the family on shopping trips to Birmingham. We use dto go on the train, which was fantastic fun as she loved the train and none of us went on one that often, it made such a change from the car or bus. We would arrive very early in the morning and get a drink at the shopping centre while waiting for the shops to open. Then we would do some early morning looking around before it got too busy. We used to stay near New Street station and shop in the shopping mall there for quite a long time as there were a lot of shops there which we liked. We would then tend to head to a restaurant for lunch, somewhere pretty cheap and I would always have something with chips, which was a real treat! My Dad would normally disappear in to the big bookshop for quite a while, as he loves books and finds shopping boring. My Mother, me and my sister would then normally go clothes shopping.
There are still a lot of good shops in Birmingham, in fact it is much better now so why not hire a car so that you can easily see all of the different shopping areas. They are spread throughout the city and with great car parking facilities, a car is a great way to carry all of those heavy bags home and a great excuse to do more shopping than you need!
