If you are heading from Birmingham airport then make sure that you pick up your hire car so that you can head straight to the Bull Ring. The Bull Ring is steeped in history as markets were in this area from back as far as the middle ages where it was used for textile trading. Many other markets developed around it and as the town got more industrial it became the main retail area. However in the earlier 1800′s an act was passed in parliament to allow new markets to open in the town and the properties in the bull ring area could be demolished. The name Bull Ring was given to the area because there were rings to tie bulls to before they were slaughtered and sold in the butcher shops in the area. In the 1960′s a shopping centre was built there and the old indoor market was demolished to make way for the first indoor shopping area in the UK. Unfortunately it was unpopular as rents were very high and shoppers did not like the escalators which often broke down and the modern design quickly looked very out of date. In the 2000′s a more modern shopping centre was put in its place. The new shopping centre is the busiest on in the whole of the UK and is the twelfth largest so if you like shopping then this is the place to be. Inside it has one of the only four Selfridges stores and the largest Debenhams outside of London.
